Within just 30 minutes of HMB, going south on Cabrillio (Hwy 1) are some wonderfully picturesque and diverse beaches that have escaped the crowds. Cowell Ranch Beach is one of the prettiest with its small, curving stretch of golden sand protected by sheltering cliffs in the middle of an area that's been a ranch since the late 1800s. San Gregorio State Beach is often strewn with driftwood is a great place for beachcombing, beach play and bird watching in the adjacent estuary. Pomponio State Beach is know for its wide sand lots of gently-sloping sand at the base of high sandstone bluffs and a small lagoon faces onto roaring surf. Bean Hollow State Beach has some of the best tidepooling on the California coast, with lots of craggy rocks just below the surface, a walking path between the two sections of this beach where on the southern end, seals are perched on the ocean rocks and is the home of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
